Histoire de la Société canadienne des données ouvertes
Le Sommet canadien des données ouvertes (SCDO), devenu depuis la Société canadienne des données ouvertes (toute coïncidence d'acronymes est à regretter !), était l'événement annuel où les défis les plus pressants auxquels est confrontée la communauté des données ouvertes étaient abordés à l'échelle nationale. Des acteurs de tous les secteurs s'y réunissaient pour partager leurs meilleures pratiques et leurs expériences locales, apprendre auprès d'experts internationaux de renom et développer la communauté de façon stratégique et collaborative.
CODS fait partie d'un ensemble d'événements et d'organisations dynamiques œuvrant dans le domaine des données ouvertes au Canada, témoignant de l'essor rapide de la communauté canadienne des données ouvertes au cours de la dernière année. Des groupes de citoyens engagés de partout au Canada se réunissent régulièrement pour nouer des partenariats, notamment pour faire progresser deux projets prometteurs à court terme :

Open Hub, un portail Web/centre d'échange d'informations ouvertes au Canada, actuellement en version alpha, bientôt disponible à l'adresse http://ouropenhub.ca ; et
-
une entité à but non lucratif composée de membres pour orienter les futurs CODS.
De plus, GO Open Data (le sommet annuel ontarien sur les données ouvertes) en est à sa septième édition, des initiatives visent à fédérer les portails ouverts comme celui de Niagara, et en mai, le Canada a accueilli le Sommet mondial du Partenariat pour un gouvernement ouvert ainsi que de nombreux événements connexes. Le mouvement pour les données ouvertes vit une période passionnante.
CODS a toujours été et demeure un événement communautaire et participatif. Il a vu le jour en 2013 en Colombie-Britannique. En 2019, le comité organisateur national bénévole a décidé de constituer en société et de cofonder la Société canadienne des données ouvertes .

The B.C. Open Data Summit was held at Simon Fraser University’s Segal Graduate School of Business in downtown Vancouver, founded and organized by Herb Lainchbury and the BC Open Data Society.

April 27-28, 2016
Canadian Open Data Summit in Saint John
Co-hosted by New Brunswick Social Policy Research Network and nb+, a collaboration between the Government of New Brunswick and IT industry group, TechImpact. Canadian Open Data Awards (full slate) created, leveraging CODS15’s categories for the original single award. New award for Canadian Open Data Leader of the Year, won by Dr Tracey Lauriault. There were sister events on open data for non-profits and a data visualization challenge. The City of Surrey, BC won both the Open Data for Democracy Award and the overall Canadian Open Data Excellence Award 2016.
June 12-14, 2017
Canadian Open Data Summit in Edmonton
The Canadian Open Data Excellence Award 2018 went to Données Québec. Canadian Open Data Rising Star 2018 was the Skeena Knowledge Trust. The Summit concluded with a consensus that the stakeholders strongly desired a community of practice around Open Data.

A Busy Year for the Open Movement

CODS Governance Working Group struck

Recommendation accepted to form a non-profit membership based Canadian Open Data Society to replace the unincorporated volunteer committee that had been ensuring the Summit took place annually

Recommendation accepted to skip 2019 and hold the next CODS in 2020 (roughly 18 months after CODS18/Niagara), using the gap year to get the Society started, to set up a Board of Directors and membership, and to course-correct the Summit back to being a spring event.

Democracy dies in darkness (Washington Post). But the better perspective is that democracy thrives in the open. The open movement is all about keeping our society and our government human-centred in the digital age - and about putting on our own tights and a cape, each of us, as citizens, to do our bit to fortify democracy.
