Funding Opportunities with Mitacs

The Canadian Open Data Society hosted our own Open Data Funding Opportunity Webinar on International Open Data Day 2022 with special guest Mel Chaar, Director, Mitacs Strategic Account Management and Business Development.

Mitacs is a not-for-profit, private organization bringing industry partners together with academia to create Canadian value. We empower Canadian innovation through effective partnerships that deliver solutions to our most pressing challenges. Our aim is to continuously strengthen Canadian economic growth and productivity. Founded in 1999, Mitacs supports a wide range of disciplines, from STEM to social innovation, our undertaking includes college and undergraduate students, as well as new graduates and postdocs. Our customers include businesses, hospitals, municipalities, and not-for-profit organizations of all sizes and in all sectors. With close to 400 employees and regional hubs in Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver, Mitacs is an integral part of Canada’s innovation ecosystem.

They fund municipalities, non-profits, and small-to-medium-size businesses to take on STEM interns and graduates for innovation projects - a topic surely to be of great interest to all our members and stakeholders!

Lessons from teaching digital to gov't execs & what it means for open data

This month we were pleased to welcome Ryan Androsoff, Founder and CEO of Think Digital, a consultancy focused on helping public sector organizations to adapt and thrive in the era of digital disruption. Think Digital advocates for agile, human-centered approaches to solving problems that incorporate innovative uses of digital technology and data to advance the public good.

Ryan is an international expert on digital government with a passion for public sector entrepreneurship and more than two decades of experience working with government and international organizations in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Since 2018 Ryan has partnered with the Institute on Governance to lead their digital leadership programs and to provide advisory services for a variety of government organizations to assist with their digital transformation efforts.

ESRI’s Community Map of Canada

The Community Map of Canada is a basemap of Canada built from authoritative data, collected closest to source and updated daily. Seamlessly created to one common specification and compliant with international standards, it provides unrestricted access to community maps and imagery across the country.

Alia will be describing this program and highlighting the value of Open Data in Canada to its successful operation for the benefit of all Canadians.
