A Hands-On Introduction to Wikidata

Did you know that you could become an open data contributor in just a few minutes?

Wikidata is a free and open knowledge base linked to Wikipedia. Boasting nearly 1 million data items about everything in the world, it is an essential information source for Google, Bing and many other discovery services.

In this hands-on introduction, you will learn the basics of Wikidata. You will be guided step-by-step as you create your account and add descriptive data about your local cultural venues. We will also show you how to connect Wikidata to other open databases and display data points over a map. By the end of the session, you will be able to edit Wikidata records about all of the things, persons, and places that matter most to you.

This online event is co-hosted by the Canadian Open Data Society and the Canadian Association for the Performing Arts. It will primarily be facilitated in English, but questions in French will also be welcome. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Presenters:

Frédéric Julien (Research and Development Director, CAPACOA)
